The M-462 ABIR (4x4) multipurpose tactical vehicle was designed and developed using the considerable experience gained by Automotive Industries Limited (AIL) during its involvement with the earlier M-325 Commandcar series of 4x4 trucks. The M-325 Commandcar been sold to other countries, particularly those in Central and South America.

The layout of the M-462 ABIR is conventional but compared to its immediate predecessor, the M-325 Commandcar, many new features have been incorporated to improve crew comfort, the smoothness of the ride and enhance all-round visibility. The cab is a more ergonomic design and can comfortably accommodate the driver and two passengers. The standard cargo body can seat up to 12 passengers under a canvas tilt. Two engines are available. One is a 6.5 litre V-8 diesel and the other a V-8 petrol unit. A fully automatic three-speed transmission is used with the diesel engine while a manual gearbox is optional for the petrol engine version. Integral power steering is provided. Right-hand drive is optional. Maintenance costs and time are stated to be low. The standard version of the ABIR can have a canvas top to the cab and a canvas tilt over the cargo area. The cab doors are also canvas and can be readily removed. Metal doors are available as an option, together with a hardtop cabin cover and air conditioning. Also available as options are various armoured protection kits or complete bodies providing protection against projectiles up to 7.62 mm armour-piercing. The armours involved could include either ballistic steel or advanced ceramics and compounds developed by Dyneema. Versions of the ABIR include the following: multipurpose cargo and personnel carrier; patrol and reconnaissance vehicle; police duties vehicle; weapon carrier (including mortars); light weapon tractor; communication shelter carrier; ambulance; mine-shielded patrol vehicle; and water or fuel tanker.
 
 
The Abir M-462 is a multipurpose high performance 4x4 military vehicle designed to meet power, speed, cross country mobility and reliability requirements of a modern army.The Abir's combination of short wheelbase, wide tread and low center of gravity together with a powerful, high torque 6.5 liter diesel engine, results in an agile and very stable vehicle.

The large cargo bed cab carries up to 10 troops (+ 3 troops in the cab). In addition, it can be used as a platform for a variety of utilities of up to 1800kg of weight.

The driver's cab is available in a soft top version. The cargo body is covered by PVC coated tarpaulin supported by 2 safety roll-bars. The soft top version is easily transformed into a patrol and reconnaissance version by removing the driver's cab and roll-bars and lowering the windshield forward.

The automatic transmission, integral power steering and flexible yet rugged frame contributes to the Abir's mobility under extreme field conditions and rough terrain.

The low silhouette and modest external dimensions facilitate fast loading and unloading of cargo and speedy exit of troops, as well as deployment by airplane or helicopter.

The Abir M-462 is combat proven and incorporates innovations resulting from military experience.

This version of the Abir M-462 is designed and combat tested to protect troops and driver against the effect of mine blasts and to be used as a patrol vehicle.Cab and cargo body costructed of heavy duty steel plates.

Cargo body floor strengthened by honeycomb partitions.

Two safety roll-bars to protect the crew should the vehicle overturn in case of mine blast.

Troop seats with energy absorbing feature reducing blast shock.

This version of the Abir M-462 is designed to operate as an anti-riot vehicle, enabling transportation of troops in urban areas subject to incidiary bombs and stone throwing.Polycarbonate shielded driver's cab and cargo body. Roof and sides provide full protection from stones, incidiary bombs, splinters and heavy or sharp objects.

The transparent material enable full control of the patrolled area.

Shooting holes in doors and side panels enable use of anti-riot measures.

Windshield, headlamp and front grill are protected by mesh wire screens.

Split windshield allows individual lowering of each section.
